  • PADI Self-Reliant Specialty Diver Course (2026)

    padi instructor internship

Become a Self-sufficient Diver to Increase Your Safety and Freedom While Enjoying Your Dive

The purpose of the Self-Reliant Diver specialty course is to recognize and accept the role of the buddy system and its contributions to diver safety while identifying and developing self-reliance and independence while diving. Self-reliant diving doesn’t mean leaving your buddy at the first chance. Properly practiced, diving independently is a disciplined form of scuba rooted in careful planning and self-sufficiency. It requires the proper gear, training and attitude.

This PADI course covers when diving alone may be applicable, and the need to compensate for those situations, including dive planning, life support system readiness, adaptive training, equipment and responsibility.

There are two reasons for an experienced diver to take the Self-Reliant diver course:

    1. To develop the skills of planning and carrying out dives without a partner when preferred or necessary.
    2. To sharpen skills of diving self-reliance, making the diver a stronger partner in a dive pair or team.

This course is an introduction to self-reliant diving that helps student divers develop the skills, knowledge and techniques necessary to rely on themselves first, whether or not they are diving with a partner, including:

    • The value and application of the buddy system.
    • The philosophy of, and motivation for, diving without a partner.
    • Potential risks of diving alone, and how to manage those risks.
    • The value of equipment redundancy and what back-up equipment is needed.
    • Dive planning and gas management.

    Prerequisite

to qualify for the Self-Reliant Diver course, an individual must:

    1. Be certified as a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver or have a qualifying certification from another training organization.
    2. Have a minimum 100 logged dives.
    3. Be 18 years of age or older.
    4. Successfully complete a dive skills assessment by a PADI Self- Reliant Diver Specialty Instructor.

  • Protecting Our Reef & Marine Life

Protecting Our Reef & Marine Life

6th March 2020 – After 2 years of lobbying and pursuing various government agencies, we finally got a Reef Buoy Line back around Kata Reef. With the support of local professional divers, Kata communities and the Phuket Rescue Center at Kata Beach, 60 orange buoys line, approximately 250 meters long, were tied down to protect the reef.

Since the pandemic has closed borders to Thailand, the reef has been thriving over the past year, despite increased “bad fishing” practices. With the economy crashing in Phuket, Kata and Karon towns had seen a lost of almost 80% in population and close to 90% of the businesses shuttered doors. Kata sub-district is one of the hardest hit community in Thailand due to increased travel restrictions and borders closure. When the borders open again, you can plan your vacation by booking a five star resort and charting a private flight from Jettly.

To ensure that our seas, beaches and coral reefs are not getting abandoned, we extended our Care & Share Initiative to also support the protection of our marine environment. With the support any divers coming to learn to dive, taking PADI Dive courses or joining in our dive trips, we share our small earnings to raise funding for regular projects in Dive Against Debris, recovery of deadly discarded ghost nets, beach and reef clean-ups.
